Hải Vân Pass: How to Get From Da Nang to Huế (2026)

The Hải Vân tunnel's rules ban motorbikes, bicycles and pedestrians, so riders cross on the pass road over the top, past the Hải Vân Quan relic. Vietnam Railways' "Kết nối di sản miền Trung" heritage train also crosses the pass between Huế and Đà Nẵng.

Which way you can cross

The tunnel’s 2005 rules, as published by Nhân Dân, state:

Cấm các loại xe mô-tô, xe đạp và người đi bộ vào hầm.

Motorcycles, bicycles and pedestrians are prohibited from entering the tunnel.

The same 2005 rules, as published by Nhân Dân, also ban vehicles carrying toxic substances, gas, fuel or oil, and explosives.

Vietnam’s traffic law backs a vehicle-banning road sign with a fine:

Phạt tiền từ 2.000.000 đồng đến 3.000.000 đồng đối với người điều khiển xe thực hiện một trong các hành vi vi phạm sau đây: … b) Đi vào khu vực cấm, đường có biển báo hiệu có nội dung cấm đi vào đối với loại phương tiện đang điều khiển, trừ các hành vi vi phạm quy định tại điểm a, điểm b khoản 7 Điều này và các trường hợp xe ưu tiên đang đi làm nhiệm vụ khẩn cấp theo quy định.

A driver who enters a prohibited area, or a road with a sign banning the vehicle type being driven, is fined 2,000,000–3,000,000 VND, except for the acts in points a and b of clause 7 of this article and for priority vehicles on emergency duty.

Steps to cross Hải Vân Pass

1. Check your vehicle. The tunnel’s 2005 rules ban motorbikes, bicycles and pedestrians from entering it.
2. Driving through the tunnel. Pay the toll at the north Hải Vân toll station — 110,000 VND for cars under 12 seats and trucks under 2 tonnes, as of 2021. You need a Vietnam-valid licence to drive yourself — see driving in Vietnam as a foreigner.
3. Riding a motorbike or bicycle. Take the pass road over the top, since the tunnel’s rules ban motorbikes and bicycles. In the first half of 2024, a Đèo Cả deputy general director told Tạp chí Xây dựng that 7 motorbikes entered the tunnels. Of those, 5 entered Hải Vân 1 in the north–south direction and 2 entered Hải Vân 2 in the south–north direction.
4. Stop at Hải Vân Quan. Buy a ticket — 70,000 VND per adult, children free. VnExpress reported opening hours of 7h to 17h30 daily.
5. Or take the train. Board Vietnam Railways’ “Kết nối di sản miền Trung” heritage train between Huế and Đà Nẵng via Lăng Cô. HĐ1 departs Huế 7:05, reaching Đà Nẵng 10:10; HĐ3 departs Huế 14:30, reaching Đà Nẵng 18:15.

Hải Vân Quan

Hải Vân Quan began welcoming visitors again on 1 August 2024, managed by the Hue Ancient Capital Heritage Conservation Center. On 14 April 2017, the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism ranked it a National Heritage Site under Decision No. 1531/QĐ-BVHTTDL. The restoration project cost over 42 billion VND, funded 50% by Đà Nẵng city and 50% by Thừa Thiên Huế province.

Vietnam Railways runs the “Kết nối di sản miền Trung” heritage tourist train, which takes visitors across Hải Vân Pass, between Huế and Đà Nẵng.

Motorbike shuttle through the tunnel

Đèo Cả Infrastructure Investment JSC, which manages and operates the tunnel, has at times suspended its shuttle service that carries people, motorbikes and cargo through the tunnel. In September 2022, during Typhoon Noru evacuation preparations, Đèo Cả said the shuttle station would keep operating until it had carried everyone through, rather than stop on a fixed schedule.

Not confirmed: Whether the 110,000 VND car toll set in 2021 is still today's rate is unclear; no newer official toll schedule was found. Whether Đèo Cả's shuttle service that carries motorbikes, people and cargo through the tunnel runs on a routine basis today, and what it costs, is unclear. Hải Vân Quan's reported opening hours of 7h to 17h30 appear only in press coverage, not on the relic management board's own page. The newest source found banning motorbikes from the tunnel is from 2024; nothing newer was located. An official height or weight limit forcing oversized vehicles onto the pass road, and its exact figure, was not found. The official resolution number behind Hải Vân Quan's 70,000 VND ticket price was not found, only press reports of the date it took effect. A clean official timetable and fare for regular, non-tourist trains between Đà Nẵng and Huế, separate from the heritage tourist train, was not found.
