Da Nang Cathedral (Pink Church): Visiting Hours, Mass Times and How to Get There

The parish notice reads “Danang Cathedral is open to visitors: Monday to Saturday 08:00 - 11:30 13:30 - 16:30”. The notice is dated 28 December 2022 and took effect on 1 January 2023.

The city tourism portal says Da Nang Cathedral is known as Rooster Church.

Mass times

The parish website lists these Mass times in its Mass-times block.

• Sunday: 05:30, 08:00 (children’s Mass), 10:00 (English), 15:00, 16:30 and 18:00.
• Weekdays: a morning Mass at 05:00 and an afternoon Mass at 17:15.
• Saturday: one evening Mass at 17:15, which the parish describes as the celebration of Sunday liturgy.

The parish also lists confession from 14:30 to 16:00 on Thursdays and Saturdays every week.

The building

The city tourism portal says the cathedral was built in 1923 under priest Louis Vallet, is nearly 70 m high and is in the Gothic style. The parish says the current church was built between February 1923 and September 1924.

The parish says the church was blessed on 14 September 1924 by Bishop Grangeon and Bishop Allys, with the Sacred Heart of Jesus as its title.

The rooster and the name

The portal says the church is known as Tourane Church and Rooster Church, owing to the cockerel image on the pinnacle. It says the church has officially been the Cathedral of Danang Diocese since 1963.

Inside and behind the church

Inside, the portal says visitors can see paintings and statues of biblical scenes in the Western Catholic Church’s artistic style.

Behind the church, the portal says, lies a stone grotto of the Virgin Mary modelled on the grotto in Lourdes, France.

DanaBus route 02 has a stop named “Rooster Church (opposite 151 Tran Phu)” on Tran Phu. The stop is on the outbound list from the Central Bus Station to Cua Dai.

DanaBus route 21 has the same stop on its outbound list from the Central Bus Station to Tam Ky Bridge. DanaBus writes the stop name in Vietnamese as “Nhà thờ Con Gà”.

When to go and how long

Come Monday to Saturday, either 08:00-11:30 or 13:30-16:30. Sunday is not a visiting day.

The last visiting hour ends at 16:30, before the 17:15 weekday and Saturday Masses.

Nearby and how to combine it

• Han Market is at 119 Tran Phu.
• Han River Bridge is on Le Duan Street, Hai Chau District. The portal says the walk from Han Market to the bridge takes about 10 minutes.

Half-day plan: visit the cathedral in the 08:00-11:30 window, go on to Han Market at 119 Tran Phu, then walk about 10 minutes from the market to Han River Bridge. Finish at Dragon Bridge in the evening.
